Epsom Investec Ladies Day 2016 UK

Investec Ladies Day Epsom Downs Racecourse

Last year in 2015 I attended my first UK Epsom Ladies day, five days after getting off the plane from Australia, very jet lagged... I was told it was one event not to miss, leading up to Royal Ascot. To my surprise I was chosen as one of the top five finalists of the day of the best dressed lady wearing millinery I had made the day before with left over millinery material and lace I hand dyed, since my studio was yet to arrive from Australia, I had no choice. But I was very please with the result, as I had created something so different! I loved the shape and the blue hand dyed color turned out very pretty. Everyone who knows me, knows I love charity stores to try and find vinatge one off pieces. I altered this blue cotton drill dress to suit my shape, and bought at a charity store in Australia. The belt was the finishing touch, as it pinched in my waist to great great silhouette. The lace crochet gloves were also a vintage shop find.

I attended again this year with a bit more awareness, sleep and preparation of what the race day is all about. I love Epsom, it's set among the green fields, the fashion is getting better each year, and the people are very friendly. The millinery is also getting a lot more amazing, where as last year I could only spot a handful of couture millinery which wasn't store bought, I spotted a lot more creative and one off pieces, which made me smile.

Here is a video from the 2015 Epsom Derby wherre my Millinery made the top 5 Best dressed final.

The outfit:

I wore a red tassle millinery piece from my current Ana Bella Millinery collection, I find red always stands out. The tassle is something I have wanted to incorporate into my collection. I found my handbag from a store called "joy" and my dress was from Chi Chi london online.

It's a nice warm up to Royal Ascot. Although this year it was quite cold and rainy, the year before the sun was out all day, and I didn't even need a jumper! or raincoat! Oh well, next year we hope for sunshine Epsom :)

So this year, was a buzz with ladies, all hoping to win the best dressed lady of the day.

How do Epsom run their ladies days:

around 11am the gates open, ladies will have their photo taken, and judges will choose from the photos, about 8-10 ladies, who have made it to the top ten best dressed. The top ten or 8 then make their way to the winning parade ring, and the judges then have the final say of the top three, best dressed, runner up, and second runner up. Hello magazine representative, Vogue Williams and editor in chief made the choice this year of the winners.

I think there were probably about 300 photo entries, judging by the amount of ladies that had there photo taken, and then at 2.50pm all the ladies were glued to phone screens to see if their phone rang. I was standing among some girlfriends, who were also waiting for that phone call from the judges... and then my phone rang, we all screamed and I was asked to go to the winning circle to wait for the rest of the day to unfold.

The final result, I made it to the top 5 Best Dressed Ladies, two years in a row, and just as exciting as last year standing up there among the other ladies. :)! I love dressing up and making an effort, and to be wearing my own millinery label is always the best part.

The next day I woke, to find my face and millinery on the cover of "The Times" London newspaper. one of the photographers who took a photo of me and some friends wearing my millinery, had managed to be "a times" photographer and I ended up on the front page. Now that is something to wake up to! I have now bought a few copies so I can tell all my grandchildren I was once on the front cover of the the newspaper.

Epsom is a great day to spend with your girlfriends, not too far away from London, hopefully next year it will be a bit more sunny.
